The most recent Curren$y project, the Drive in Theatre has been met with surprisingly well reception. After Curren$y was dropped from Cash Money sometime back I expected that to be the end of him. Like "well there he goes, another guy deaded by a label. Bodybag him." But somehow he's made a return with a strong cult following and they've latched onto this mixtape. Is it worth that following? I can see the reason. It's a very relaxing listen. The production is calming and does some very nice movie samples.
Wiping my cars off, putting my jewels on. My pinky ring show and prove who's the true Don
Normally I avoid anyone with a dollar sign in their name given the inevitable irrelevancy they all fall into and our host doesn't stray from the standard topics of brag rap. However he does it decently, can't say his lyrics are ever really impressive but he rolls with his style and does it well. But I doubt he can shock any of you with his ability on the mic, this tape is held up by the production quite a bit.
We family, I'm there for you, right or wrong. They gonna have to get us all the same way, dog
That's not to discredit the solid work he does. There are some wack lines though...
Andretti most slept on like ya big homie's couch
Never said he was a punchline rapper...but this may be chill enough of a tape to excuse some of that. The sound of the tracks is what separates Curren$y from everyone else doing the same form of Hip hop, that goes a long way here.
The Highlights:
Godfather Four feat. Action Bronson
El Camino feat. Mary Gold
The Usual Suspects feat. Smoke DZA, Fiend, and Cornerboy P
The Lowlight:
E.T. feat. B-Real
The Gem:
Stove Top
Is it Worth a Listen?
As stated previous it's a very relaxing listen and if that's your thing you should enjoy this. If you want the next punchline ridden, metaphors all day tape. You won't love this. I'd give it a chance though for at least a few tracks. The features are generally well done and the Swing like production is rather unique given how commonly placed the subject material is. The best attribute to Curren$y's Drive In may be that he doesn't rap over generic trap beats like some rappers out there...
Overall Grade: C+

Classic reviews coming soon. Til next time, One Love.
