A Quick Review: The Soul Tape 3 by Fabolous

Not on my initial list of things to review but in anticipation of Loso's Way: Rise 2 Power I'm reviewing his latest project, the Soul Tape 3. Now Fab has been a main stay in Mainstream and Underground Hip hop since the late 90s when he dropped Ghetto Fabolous. He's never been as consistently radio as someone like a Jay-Z but also not as revered in the underground as a Big L or even a Cassidy. He's hits blow up like Can't Deny It feat. Nate Dogg, Can't Let You Go, You Make Me Better, and the amazing Breathe off his third LP. None of his albums have ever really been impressive just servicable until Real Talk they seemed tip dip in quality. He stayed dropping Platinum or Gold sales records until Loso's Way five years ago. A rather sub-par album I may review in the future.

I'm old enough to know better, young enough to not give a fuck

Since then he's dropping two mixtape series in There Is No Competition with DJ Drama and now the Soul Tape series. I enjoyed the previous series and the Soul Tapes have been solid up until his last, this one. If I may say, I do in fact really enjoy this. It brings Loso back to his best and in a more mature state for the most part. He takes some jabs to Trinidad James and Drake in this, giving off a "I don't give a fuck" attitude he's lost and now regained.

There's a few guest appearances, a dope verse by fellow N.Y. emcee Jadakiss and Jeremih and Meek Mill come along for the ride...for better or for worse. This recent project seemed to spark interest in Fab's next album, and I have some hopes for it and will of course be reviewing it when that finally drops.

The Highlights:
Everything Was The Same
The Get Back

The Lowlight:
Thim Slick feat. Jeremih

The Gem:
The Hope feat. Jadakiss

Should You Check It Out?
Given it's on youtube about five times over it's worth a listen, even paying for it on iTunes if you're a Fabolous fan check it out. If you like commercial Hip hop you should find a lot to like here.

Overall grade: B-

Until next time, Buh-Buh By to Ya!
